Popular Vintage Home Décor Trends Of The 1950s

The 1950s didn’t have just one or two trends… there were all kinds of vintage home décor trends. And, it can be difficult to choose what home décor style to do your home in. What were the popular home décor trends of the 1950s?

1 – 1950s Floors

There were three common types of floors used in home during the 1950s. These were:

- Checkered
- Hardwood
- Linoleum

Linoleum was introduced to the world in the 1950s, with many seeing the flooring product as dreary but useful. Many manufacturers restyled linoleum floors to be more vibrant and flamboyant. Thus, linoleum floor patterns were often placed in alternating colors.

The second popular flooring used during the 1950s was the checkered floor, which included the colors of black and white or red and white. The third popular kind of 1950s flooring was hardwood, which was seen in a number of homes. Today, hardwood floor is still very popular despite the fact that carpets have made their way into more homes and come in an array of textures and colors.

2 – 1950s Retro Colors

There were three kinds of color trends used during the 1950s, which are:

- Scandinavian
- Pastel
- Modern

- The Scandinavian color pattern was deeply swayed by nature, with a color palette of various shades of cream, gray, green and brown.
- Pastel colors included blue, mint green, pale yellow, pink and turquoise.
- Modern colors are generally bright and include black, electric blue, orange, red, white and yellow.

Of course, the biggest color arrangement involved the colors black, red and white, which was often seen in diners.

3 – 1950s Vintage Furniture

The furniture of 1950s was certainly unique and came in various styles like:

- Stuffed conventional furniture
- Scandinavian furniture with clean lines and light-colored woods
- Odd shaped furniture
- Space age furniture

It was not uncommon to see furniture made of coated plywood. Another furniture fashion included vinyl chairs and chrome, which were paired together with chrome-legged tables and Formica tabletops.

4 – 1950s Vintage Cloths

The fabrics of the 1950s included polka dots, checks, strips and stars, which were considered very bold styles. However, the infamous Boomerang pattern and atomic graphics were also popular during the 1950s. These patterns were often seen on tablecloths, wallpapers, furniture and curtains. Many fabrics also consider of abstract designs, flowers and fruit. Bark cloth, which is a tightly-entwined cotton fabric, seen in many modern designs and used in furnishings for upholstery and curtains.

5 – 1950s Vintage Accessories

There were all kinds of 1950s accessories made that you could line your home with. For instance, atomic age motifs began appearing on fabrics and glassware. Atomic clocks and sunburst comprised of wood and metal. However, for the first time, more accessories were being made from plastic.

Now, a 1950s kitchen included wall clocks, chrome appliances, stainless steel or enamel bread bins and canisters and pastel plastic. Tupperware storage containers and vibrant plates, glasses and bowls were quite popular during this era.

In other areas of the home, lamps were used as interior decorating statements and not just for lighting purposes. They often had dynamic, abstract and geometric shapes, which had fabric shades of geometric, atomic or solid prints.
